Where audience and customer insight live
There is no section literally named audience, and none named customer. Both live inside the avatar section, the richest part of the whole research phase. If you came to this chapter looking for audience research or customer research, this is the lesson you want.
Three views of the same person
The avatar section is built from three sub-studies that run in sequence and fold into one record.
- Psychographic paints who the buyer is: their situation, their beliefs, and what they want.
- Mass desire surfaces the deep wants a person already carries, the ones a campaign can attach itself to instead of trying to manufacture demand from nothing.
- NeuroState reads the emotional and mental state the buyer is in at the moment your ad reaches them.
Reading all three together is the difference between meeting someone and skimming their profile. You end up with a person you can actually write for, not a demographic label.
What it does not do here
Pain points and objections are not part of the avatar section, close as they sit to it. Those get extracted one layer later, in Creative Strategy, using the avatar and mass-desire work as the raw input. So the avatar section tells you who the buyer is and what they want; turning that into objection handling and pain-point framing is a strategy step, and the next chapter covers it.
Because the avatar section drives so much of the messaging, it is often the one worth re-running the moment you learn something new about your real customers.
