Lesson 4 of 4 · 5 min

Long-form audio

You can produce an episode-length piece that holds together.

Long-form audio fails differently from short-form. Nothing sounds wrong in any given thirty seconds, and yet it does not hold.

Steps

  1. Structure it in segments before you generate anything.
  2. Give each segment one job and a reason to lead to the next.
  3. Vary pace between segments rather than within them.
  4. Listen to the transitions, because that is where long pieces come apart.

Why structure matters more here

In a thirty second piece the listener will not get lost. In a twenty minute one, structure is the only thing keeping them oriented, and a flat run of similar segments is what makes people stop.

What to watch for

Consistent energy across a long piece is tiring rather than engaging. Deliberate quiet stretches make the loud ones land.
