Shot variety

Consecutive scenes often look like the same shot with different words over it. The cause is that only the subject changed while the camera stayed exactly where it was.

Steps

1. Write your scene list, then add a shot size to each one: wide, medium, close.
2. Make sure no two consecutive scenes share a size.
3. Change the angle on at least one: low, high, over the shoulder.
4. Generate and watch the cuts rather than the scenes.

Why size matters most

Cutting between two medium shots of the same subject reads as a mistake. Cutting from wide to close reads as intent. The rule of thumb from editing is to change either the size or the angle noticeably on every cut.

What to watch for

Variety has a limit. If every scene is a different size, angle and location, the video stops being one thing. One constant, usually the location or the person, is what holds it together while everything else moves.
