Why handheld outperforms polished
You can deliberately make something look less produced, and know why that lifts results.
This is the part that feels wrong. Making the video look less produced usually makes it perform better, and the reason is not that people prefer bad video.
Steps
- Ask for handheld framing rather than a locked-off camera.
- Keep the setting ordinary. A kitchen beats a studio.
- Use available light rather than a lit setup.
- Leave the first half second slightly unpolished.
Why it works
Production value is a signal of spend, and spend signals advertising. In a feed of people talking to their phones, the professionally lit one is the one that gets identified as an ad and skipped.
What to watch for
There is a floor. Audio that is hard to understand, or framing that cuts off the speaker's face, is not authentic, it is unwatchable. Reduce the polish, not the clarity.
